Why Am I Late To Every Fandom?

We all know the feeling. You finally get around to reading/watching/listening to that thing that your friend recommended to you, only to find that there are millions of books/episodes/pages that have been published. Most fans will experience this every once in a while, and will often skip ahead or take the time to catch up on everything.
Unfortunately for me, I seem to arrive (unfashionably) late to almost every fandom I join. For example:
- Welcome to Night Vale
- Supernatural
- Avengers/Marvel Canon Universe
- Assassination Classroom
and, last but not least:
- Homestuck
"Okay, okay." I hear you saying. "You were late to a few fandoms. Why is that such a big deal?"
Well, dear reader, let me give you a few reasons why.
Firstly, time. If there's a lot to catch up on, and you're a busy person, you'll find yourself with almost no down time. The sheer amount of content already out there means that often people will just give up trying to catch up.
Secondly, spoilers. Even though the majority of the internet is good at tagging their spoilers, if a show or series has been running for a long time, people may not feel the need to tag spoilers for things that happened early on, or that they're sure people will know. Unfortunately for little old me who's still on season 2 of Supernatural, this means that I already know about many important plot points and character arcs that I haven't even seen, which takes away from the feeling of finding out something for the first time.
And finally, moving on. If something has been running for ages, or is quite old, fans may have moved on to more exciting things like new content from the creator, thus leaving the fandom as an almost-barren wasteland.
So yeah, it can be a big deal, but at least if means you'll never be stuck waiting for the next season to come out.
Better late than never, as they say.
