Random Acts of Kindness

We live in a world where hate is common. People dislike each other because they have different opinions of the world, or because they look different. In a way, hatred has shaped our past, and will probably continue to shape our future. That’s a pretty discouraging statement.

Imagine how different the world would be today if everyone in the past had just decided to be kind. Segregation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia would never have happened. Wars wouldn’t’ve been fought. School shootings wouldn't even exist.

I know, I know, it’s an optimistic and unrealistic idea, and for something like that to happen, it would take kindness on a global scale. That’s where ‘Random Acts of Kindness’ comes in. Random Acts of Kindness is a small non-profit organisation, who came together from London, New York, and beyond to answer the question:

How would our world transform if each of us put kindness front and centre in our lives?

They’re a digital platform designed to reach across oceans and time zones to inspire small ripples of everyday compassion, believing that together, our ripples of kindness can create massive waves of change. Their slogan is “kindness transcends difference”, and I think that's a pretty good idea. So, my task for you is to try and do something kind for someone else this week without expecting something in return.

I leave you with this quote from Sandra Cisneros:

“The older I get, the more I'm conscious of ways very small things can make a change in the world. Tiny little things, but the world is made up of tiny matters, isn't it?”
